No solutions presented themselves though. Moral of the story -- if the sound card is broke, live without sound. The power on led comes on the board, I am almost convinced its a faulty motherboard.

  1. Start with board one stick of memory and the video card, nothing else.
  2. Put CMOS battery back in, and take out memory, try with none, then one DIMM, then two DIMMS, and get similar results.

It mobo may not be seated properly in the case.
