Ubuntu is Open Source and is a great system, but for the average user it can be formidable to learn. I apparently wasn't able to do it quite theway you said (or at least the screen wouldn't come up) but i did trybooting in VGA mode and i do get a Windows automatically reinstalled all of my missing drivers and it worked!!!
