I have Radeon HD4670 with free drivers on Debian testing if that matters (I disabled both GPU acceleration and hardware overlay, neither of which made any difference). If you are constantly accessing your swap file, also if your hard drive is fragmented when swapping, that could explain choppy play Try what jagabo suggested with the overlay Quote If the file is 1080i interlace, you can use one field to display 960x540 @29.97 real time (video-deinterlace-discard) with much less CPU load. The solution is to change the file cache to a larger value, say 2000, in vlc player.

How much memory are you using in task manager? first with the native player & codecs, then with just VLC, and then I might add K-Lite. This means that it can under circumstances be slower than without gpu acceleration enabled.Last but not least, GPU decoding is only available for select operating systems.
